London: Royal National Hotel Review

When my boyfriend and I travelled to London in January 2013, we stayed in the Royal National Hotel based on the fact that it is pretty central to just about everything in London. We knew that we would be compromising comfort and luxury for proximity and that’s exactly what you get with this hotel.

Whether you book double or twin share room what you will get are two single beds, probably not even pushed together. The rooms are incredibly small compared to most hotels but pretty average against the European standards.  We spent three nights at the hotel in winter which meant that the rooms were heated. We couldn’t adjust the temperature so it was often too hot at times. There are also a lot of rooms so it can take a while to find yours. At around 110 pounds ($200AUD) a night, the rooms are a little overpriced.

The staff were helpful although we didn’t eat at the restaurant or require room service, just the concierge.  The staff behind the main desk were willing to help us out with mail we had received while we were out, directions to football matches and train stations and other helpful tips.

The hotel is in an absolutely GREAT location. It’s right near buses and Russell Square train station, making it extremely easy to get around London.  It is also one of the few hotels where bus tours will pick customers up from, so you can enjoy the most of a sleep in before you head off.

Don’t forget to check out the British Museum right around the corner from the hotel as well as Russell Square itself. There are always squirrels running around in the park!

I give the hotel three stars despite the average rooms because the location is simply worth it.
